Happy trip to Penang was over, but our happy life is not.
I wrote down these details of our trip so that friends who want to go to Penang in the future can look through this and catch some experiences. I used English so that when you get here, it's easier for you to find the street and location.
December 12,2010, Airasia KL - Penang 53RM/person, 8:30a.m. - 9:25a.m.
When we arrived Penang International Airport, we took the Rapid bus 401E from airport to Komtar.
After breakfast, we walked back to Komtar to take the Free Shuttle, which go around the Georgetown. The Free Shuttle bus station under Komtar is NO. 9, as we wanted to go to visit the history parts of Georgetown, we got off at NO.16 station. Right beside the Free Shuttle Station is the ST. George's Church, which was built between 1817 and 1818, is said to be the oldest Anglican church in Southeast Asia. Unfortunately, the church was under renovation, we could not get in there.
Then we kept walking along the Lebuh Farquhar Street to visit the Penang State Museum, which was almost destoryed in World War II bombing. The ticket is only 1RM per person. Because the tourists are not allowed to take pictures in the museum, we only have these two outside the museum.
Kept going, we reached the Cathedral of the Assumption. This Church was established by Father Garnault along Church Street. It moved to its present site in 1861. In 1955, it was awarded the status of a Cathedral.
There is a funny bar beside our hotel. At first, we decided to visit this bar at night, however, when we got back at night, we all felt tired and had no mood to go outside again. what a pity!
Our hotel is a nice white colonial building, and our room is big and cheap. We only lived for one night at 69 RM.
Door of our room:
The interface of the hotel:
After the reservation, we went on our history part of Goregetown. Went along the Lebuh Muntri Street, you can see the NO.7 station of the Free Shuttle.
At first we tried to wait for the bus to take us to the Fort Cornwallis, however, there were lots of human tricycles in the other side of the road. So we changed to experience the human tricycle.
The ride was good, but almost all the riders are old men, I even felt guilty to let him ride. For the reward, we gave him 10RM instead of 6RM.
On the tricycle, we went through the Dewan Sri Pinang, which is a popular venue for local and international art exhibitions, orchestras, expositions, and festivals.
Then the Town Hall, which was the previous social venue for Penang's elite back to 1880's. Its classic colonial elegance was the backdrop for a scene in the movie, Anna and the King.
The City Hall, which was built in 1903, is the headquarters of the Penang Island Municipal Council. A World War I monument for fallen soldiers is also located here.
Then the Esplanade, which is a seafront promenade bordering an open filed where festivals and events are often held.
At last, we arrived at Fort Cornwallis, which was built when Captain Francis Light first landed on Penang, is an ancient sentinel of Geroge Town which stands guard over the island's cape.
The ticket of Fort Cornwallis is only 2RM/person.
Beautiful sky of Penang:
After these, it was about 4:30p.m., we went along the Lebuh Light Street and Lebuh Downin Street to reach the NO. 1 Free Shuttle Station. On our way there, we came across the Queen Victorial Memorial Clock Tower.
We took the Free Shuttle to the NO.8 station at Lebuh Cambell Street, which is well known for its traditional Chinese medicinal shops, Indian boutiques and other stores selling merchandise. Almost all the shops were closed as we got there too early, include one of the most famous tea shop on this street.
On the contrary, when we got the most famous fried oyster, the boss said it was right the time they sold out.
Then we reached the most famous food street - Lebuh Kimberley Street . The local people also call it China Town as there are lots of Chinese living there.
After these we walked back to Komtar along Jalan Penang Street, and went on to the Gurney Plaza, which is famous for its night market. We took bus 103 from Komtar to Gurney Plaza.
The night market was amazing and full of people:
Finally I found an empty table, and my BF went to buy fried oyster.
It was very delicious, when I am writing this, I still want to eat:
The night market is endless, you cannot see the end of the food court.
The Laksa is also very nice, but we ate too much here, so we just packed it and dining out.
We bought a lot of food and went back to Komtar by 103 again. The night of Penang is alive, whereas the daytime is dead. We took the Free Shuttle went around the whole George Town again to watch the night scene and stopped at NO.7 back to our hotel.
That night was a nightmare for me, because of my BF thought the blanket was not clean, we did not use it at night, I woke up several times for the cold and made him hug me; therefore, we all got up with big eye bags in the morning. This really gave me a lesson, no matter how dirty the blanket is, I will use it instead of waking up by extreme cold!
December 13, 2010, we got up at 9 a.m. and checked the room leave the hotel. We took the Free Shuttle NO.7 again to Komtar NO.9 station, and then took bus 307 to Queensbay Mall for shopping. That was a wonderful day because discount were made in every shop and we all bought a lot of beautiful clothes.
About 2:30p.m. we got on bus 306 from Queensbay Mall to the Airport. One pity thing was, SUB gave me a beautiful Umbrella as a present but it was made by mettle, which means I could not take by hand baggage! At last, we gave it to the securaty guard at the check in. At 4:55p.m. we got on plane, arrived KL at 5:50p.m.
It was really a great trip, we all very satisfied with our self-plan trip. Hope the Redang Island trip on May 16, 2011 will be better! I love Malaysia!
